Does a weld, after being filed to shape, take bluing or browning differently than the surrounding metal. If so, what can be done to make it match? I guess it differs depending on the type of rod used? Thinking about arc welded metal here. Thanks.

More often than not the filler material (rod, mig wire...) is different than the base metal. So the welded area quite possibly will react differently to your blue/brown process. Even with matched material the weld and "heat affected zone" will have variable density and hardness compared to the rest of the part. That can affect the results as well.

A deep, dark finish, with maybe an extra application in these weld areas can minimize the visual difference.
