Hi All
I once saw pics of a TC custom shop Hawken iron mounted and blued.
The blued lock REALLY caught my eye! Very attractive compared to the usual " matte" finish. Wish they would've polished it a little bit...
Anyway. I don't know if the color case hardening on these locks is real, or a torch/ oil job as is frequently done.
Bluing over case hardening, colored or otherwise, will usually give you a purple part. I've seen a number of purple Krags over the years.
So, I'm thinking of polishing the lock and having it blued. Specifically for my flintlock Pennsylvania Hunter. Anyone try this? How'd it work?
Thanks

Disassemble the lock. White vinegar will remove the fake case hardening. Then blue it as you desire.

I've removed the case hardening on a couple of locks by soaking in vinegar, it doesn't take long. I've left mine "in the white", but a decent cold blue should work or have it professionally blued.

Vinegar. It not just for salads anymore...
It should also lightly etch the surface, being an acid.
Thanks for the tip!
