It would be interesting to see how well it works on rust browned soft steel barrels.

As for alloy barrels, back in the last century both Smith & Wesson and Colt used steaming to get the beautiful dark bluing their revolvers were known for.

One issue is there is steam and there is STEAM.

The steam that's slightly hotter than boiling water can easily have the water condense on the surface. Steam heated to 300+ degrees F can fail to condense and can be extremely difficult to produce with home equipment.

I don't know what temperature steam S&W or Colt used in their bluing process.
