I am thinking about getting a Blunderbuss with a steel barrel from the Discriminating General site.I read that they should not be fired from the shoulder due to possible injury, is this true?. Surely you could load it down and fire it this way rather than from the hip? Does anyone have first hand experience with one.
Thanks

I never heard of that before. Mine is a brass barrel that was available from Dixie Gun Works some years back, and I built it on a cut down "Bess stock", and a Davis lock. Never thought to shoot it from any where but the shoulder, and haven't been injured yet. Just lucky I guess.

Contrary to misleading info, the blunderbuss only had the exaggerated muzzle opening to facilitate loading the piece on rocking horse drawn coaches and a blood slick tossing ship deck.

Just think of them as being overly coned, otherwise no inherent difference to other smootbores.

Won't kick any harder than a carbine of the same bore size...not to be confused with the actual bell diameter. Can say from personal experience that one loaded with a handful of empty .22 cases policed up around the site. BOOM!!!

Only if you have the muzzle pointing in the wrong direction...

You need to hold the butt about 2" from your shoulder so the recoil won't hurt you...................

True story from my Granddad, circa 1917. Apparently his sister wanted to try shooting his 12 ga single shot. He was afraid she might like shooting it, so this is what he told her....................

..........She never shot it again............

It'll probably help if you only shoot the heaviest recommended load, too.

It is surprising how many myths there are surrounding firearms. If you hear any information that doesn't sound plausible check it out through a credible source.

It used to be considered "common knowledge" that you couldn't overload a muzzle loader no matter how much powder you poured into it. I heard that one from quite a few people who did a great deal of shooting, but I trust none of them ever tested that particular theory.

No, it's the blunderbuss with a steel barrel from the Discriminating General that was mentioned in the start of this thread by flash pan blue...
