Boar/canoe rifle

I have a few cheap .50 cals and one .54 I am considering making a short barrel boar rifle from one of them.

I do a lot of spot and stalk in thick brush for hogs, and I could appreciate the shorter barrel, plus I like the way they look.

Is there a basic barrel length that is used or a “window” of lengths.

Online I have seen them as short as 12 3/4” up to 16”.

Thoughts?

They made some hunting rifles for boar in Europe as short as fourteen inches, and in my oldtimers brain it seems I saw European rifles at less then a foot
The rule for shotguns is eighteen inches, that doesn’t apply to ml and is about concealment vs usefulness
IMHO eighteen is as short as I find handy to handle, but the old CVA and Lyman “plains’ pistols have turned feral hogs in to pork chops, any rifle gun size you feel comfortable with ought to serve you well.
To my eye anything less then 38” barrels look ‘sawn off’

I have a traditions deerhunter with the plastic stock that does not see any range time these days, I'm thinking about cutting the barrel down to a foot or so just to make something different with it. My idea is coming from a short barreled Jaeger that capandball showcased on his YouTube a couple years back. Doubt I'll hunt with it but it will be a hoot on the range.

If those are half stocks you could cut them to where the half stock becomes a full stock

A fifty bore with 48" twist sawed off to a shorty length becomes the equivalent of a magnum pistol, not to be sneered at as a hunting weapon. Think .50 caliber, 320 or more grains of lead like from a Lee REAL mold. Or if lucky enough to find one, a .50 semi-wadcutter as would be used in a magnum revolver. You'll be shooting with a shoulder stock at pistol ranges so accuracy won't be much of a problem. Maybe take an old second hand aluminum Lee round ball mold and drill it with a 31/64" bit to make a knocking paper patched bullet as long and heavy as you want. There's lotsa fun ways to skin that cat, or to scrape that hog!

Watch ebay for stocks and parts.

Or, sell off your deerhunter and buy a new deerhunter kit and make it your way.

I looked into restocking my deerhunter years ago but it was cost prohibitive from traditions, so much so that it would have been easier to just buy a new one with a wood stock. eBay might have one pop up every now and then. I remedied the poor balance with bondo and a handful of nails in the butt of the plastic stock.

The wooden stock on one Deerhunter was scrounged up on the cheap.
Too bad someone doesn't crank out full length replacement stocks for them. It's a huge market.

Anyone ever heard of painting a plastic stock a more earthy color and faking some wood grain? Both of these aren’t bad rifles for what they area, I just hated the camo and black stocks.

I bought both years ago second hand when I was just getting into ML. I now primarily use my .56 renegade smoothie. Just looking for a cool project.

If any of you guys are looking for some mostly finished TC Hawken stocks, I have a pile of factory seconds. I have completed a couple which were the most 'complete' and they turned out pretty nice with my limited skill set. Most of those remaining need the ramrod channel bored out, which is the biggest challenge for me. Various states of factory work on them. I have not touched any of the remaining ones. They could make some good beater guns, for sure. 15/16 channels but you could easily open that up to 1" with all the extra wood still on them.

Painting plastic is hard, I have an "unmentionable" with a plastic stock that I decided to give a paint job. Researched the best way to paint plastic, prepared the stock as per instructions, painted the appropriate coats and let it dry for over a week in ideal conditions. Scratched it clear to the plastic with my fingernail while reassembling. Granted, it's been years since then and the gun is still mostly the color that I painted it but I'm got gonna attempt it again. Best bet if your set on changing the appearance is to find someplace that does hydrodipping.

I have done several for customers, and friends and family go pick the color you want you will get the best results from a paint that is designed for plastic
