well after hours of shooting,1 broken ramrod, and lots of shots, I was finally ready for the boar hunt. I had decided on 60 grains FFF, .10 patch and .530 cast ball that my good friend thomp shooter cast for me.
I had taken the pistol to the local shoot and at 25 yards I was shooting very well, holding 1 to 2 inch groups offhand. I also managed to tag a groundhog at 55 yards with the pistol from a sitting position so i knew I was going to do good.
We left the house monday morning at 9 oclock. we arrived in michigan at 3:30 to meet our guide paul at ted nugents sunrise acres. we said our hellos and headed into the cabin. a steady rain started to fall as we sat in the cabin introducing ourselves and talking pig hunting. On the hunt would be myself, my grandpa papaw ( boar dilly) with his hawken rifle, my sister, and our 2 other friends. papaw and I were the only ones with blackpowder arms. as we sat in the cabin we looked out and there were 5 russian boars walking in the yard !!! it was a very cool sight.
when the rain died off we decided it was time to hunt ! we went out and sat at different stands. I was in a small groundblind overlooking a bait pile a mear 13 yards away. I wanted to make sure the shot would be very close so I would get good penetration. after an hour or so a group of 5 young hogs came to the bait. I watched them for a few hours but determined they were to small for what I was looking for. also a group of very nice rams came in and I was tempted to shoot one, but I held off for a trophy boar. this hog i took a picture of and I found out later it was the one papaw shot. a nice tender little 80 pounder.

i was sitting there when I heard 2 shots within 15 minutes of each other. I found out later one of our friends had shot a nice 160 pound sow and my sister had put down a very nice 4 horned ram. my guide moved me to the stand my sister had been in for the evening hunt. I sat there and watched 7 hogs go down the road towards where papaw was at. then I heard a boom and a pig squeal. papaw had been sucessful and put down the perfect eating hog that he wanted. the shot had been 42 yards and the hog only ran 50 yards before going down.

later as I sat in the blind I saw a nice group of hogs coming. in the group was a younger boar and a very large sow. I wanted to try a shot at the sow but she never stopped and the rest of the hogs followed her. close to dark I heard another shot. it was our other friend who had put down a 190 pound sow.
So i was the only one left who hadnt got anything the first night. I was confident that I would get a chance the next day at a boar. we all stayed up late telling hunting stories in the cabin. the next morning Only myself and our guide paul got up. we left the cabin early and went out for a spot and stalk hunt. we looked over alot of hogs and had a few failed attempts at stalking close enough to get a shot.

finally we found a group of 3 hogs that had a nice boar in it. then I began my stalk. i was sneeking along a path and the hogs were a few yards off the path in the woods. I kept getting closer and closer. finally I spotted them through the weeds. they were only 20 yards away. I spotted the boar and slowely crept towards him. finally he turned broadside and i lined the sights up tight right behind his shoulder. I was shaking like a leaf. he was a large boar and I had only 1 shot. to make matters worse I was a maximum of 12 yards away from it. i slowly squeezed the trigger and felt the kick of the pistol and lost my vision in the cloud of smoke. I quickly backed up to see where the boar was going. he was hunched over and running. he made it only 15 yards before he stopped and fell over !!!!! I was absoulty estatic ! paul came over and said he had watched everything through the binos. he was very impressed and said most people who say they are good with a handgun arent..but I proved myself. we walked over to my trophy. it was a very nice big pure russian boar that would break the 200 pound mark.

when we gutted it we found the ball had done some serious damage ! it was a beautiful double lung shot and the ball even exited the big hog !

Great hunt, great shot and great pictures and story! You gave us the whole package and kept us on the edge of our seats! Really impressed with your cool-headed approach and old-school pistol skills. Hope that tanned hide looks good on your wall!

Well SS you did what you wanted to do,Great job. I like the pictures and the story. Couldn't have better grand kids. Proud you both. Sister did well as she hasn't hunted that much. Was glad she was sitting with me when I dusted my little porker.
Paul asked me if I was happy when he saw the little porker? and I said yes, he said if you are I am too. The granddaughter had just done 100&2 miles on the Appalachian Trail in 6 days carrying a 30lb pack. That is something I wanted to do, but never did. PP Dilly
