if u where to bore out the riflings on a 45 cal muzzleloader to a smooth bore. would it be close to a 410 shotgun ???

The bore of a .410 is exactly what it says (.410). if you mean the chamber size( where the shell goes) then yes you would be right. The outside dimensions of the 410 shell are about.455-.46 and a bored out 45 could conceiveably hold a 410 shell, although I'm curious what your thinking. :hmm:

You're already at a .450" bore...assuming the grooves are .010" and you only bored out enough to eliminate them you'd be at .470"...(2x.010"=.020")...sort of an odd size.

As an aside, if your interest is having a smoothbore (they're great IMO) and your barrel is at least a 15/16", it "should" be able to be bored out to a normal .54cal(.28ga) size smoothbore depending on the breechplug threads.
The .54 smoothie is a very effective small game shot gun, and also shoots PRBs about like a rifle to 50-60yds for deer hunting in the woods.
(You could call the Rice Barrel Company in Asheville, NC...tell them what you have and get their take on it).

well what i have is a 45 cherokee barrel the riflings are awful ,i was just wondering if i cleaned the barrel enough to smooth it up i could make alittle squirrel gun out of it . "something close to a 410 " . thanks for the info on the 410 shell i didnt know that ,

Yeah, that's a slender little 13/16" barrel...couldn't go out to a .54cal for sure.

You could have it bored out only to the depth of the lands, then make your own cushion wads and over shot cards to fit the bore diameter you ended up with.

Then you can Google ARCH punches...they're razor sharp round punches that come in different diameters.
Pick one that is a 1/16" larger diameter than you final bore diameter for a snug fit.

Order a piece of 1/8" felt from Duro-Felt to punch out your wads.
Use some styrofoam (like from a coffee cup) or some thin cardboard (like a cereal box) to punch out your Over Shot cards.

sounds like it would be a pretty neat set up . thanks for the info . now if u can find someone to do it

Not an authority on the subject in general, only on the barrels I personally have experience with...and since I know nothing about the CVA you referred to, my suggestion is that you also ask that question to the guys at Rice Barrel Co.
Based on what I know, a simple bore job is less than $100 (assuming it can be bored out, etc)

I had the exact same idea to do with my Cherokee. I have a .32 cal, but picked up a .45 cal barrel that was shot out a while back. Figured I'd have someone bore it out to just clean the rifling for a smooth bore and make my own wad and such. I think you would end up with about a 35 gauge barrel, give, or take a little. I sent a e-mails to about everyone that does barrel boring I could find on line and most did reply, but none were able to do it. If you get it figured out let me know, I'd like to get it done someday.
