IMO, today, a 150 year old design shouldn't look like a spanky-new gun.

Now that is where you and I differ.
If I am buying a reproduction gun, I want it looking brand spanking new like it might have looked when great great grandpappy might have bought it new.
If it looks old and beat up it better be from actual age is my take.
