Boring Out Barrels

I had a Lyman Trade Rifle barrel bored from .50 to .54 late last year. Bobby charged $125 at that time, but whatever he charges it's worth it! The rifle shoots sooo much better now! Changed my original 1:48, 5 groove .50, to a .54, 1:60, 7 groove (.011 deep).

He has a 54cal barrel of mine to bore to a 58cal and said the charge is $125 plus the actual shipping. He sends an invoice with the barrel for you to pay him after you receive the barrel. I just spoke to him on the phone 5min ago about his payment method. He doesn't take credit cards, only cash, check, or MO.

Just had a .54 rebored to .58. Round groove rifling, round ball twist. Excellent work and service. He even fitted a new breech plug to the barrel and exactly matched the one that came off. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Would this job require a new breech plug?

Mr. Hoyt does excellent work.

This four shot 50 yard group was made with a Navy Arms rifle that Mr. Hoyt bored and rifled to .54 caliber with rounded grooves.

Considering the level of work he does, Bobby Hoyt works really cheap. I'd never send a barrel to anyone else to be bored out.
Actually, I have two originals I'd like to shoot. One's a heavy barrel, the other a "normal" one. Both have heavily corroded bores, both half stocks, been sitting around for 30-40 years. Also have two original o/u rifle/shotguns I used to shoot but haven't. Thanks to finding this website/forum, my interest has been rekindled. Now, if I can just find some more "stuff" around here ....shoulda/oughta marked boxes/ammo cans/totes.

Thanks again,
Your Obedient Servant

I contacted Bobby last week to do a re-bore from 36 to 40 and he quoted me 200.00 for the job which seems reasonable for a 47 inch barrel.
