Just won this auction on Gunbroker :

http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=161391852

Looks like a real nice rifle, with a repairable crack. I could not pass it up at that price. What do you think ?

Oh, the link does not work, sorry. I will see if I can post some pictures. Virginia rifle, .60 caliber Getz swamped barrel, sliding wood patchbox, relief carving, real nice rifle. Has a crack at the front of lock panel that i am confident I can fix. Got it for $795.00

You could away just post the images and describe the rifle.

Thanks, did not really need another rifle, but can't have too many flinters I guess. I think it may have been built from a Chambers kit, at least it looks very similar to their Virginia rifle. I tried to get a friend of mine to buy it so I would not be tempted, but he didn't so I did !

great looking rifle... as regards the price, if you add up the cost of the parts, you'd come slose to what you paid for the whole deal.

make good smoke!

Definitely a Chamber's kit. The kit itself goes for about $800, so personally I think you just got the bargain of a lifetime. The only bad thing I see is that the carving behind the cheekpiece is a bit clumsy.

Damn thats cheaper than a parts set. Looks darn good to me guess it all depends on the crack but from that one pick, looks like you got a heck of a deal.

It looks just like the one I have on the wall with different carving detail, A Chambers I believe, as mentioned you got it for less than the cost of parts, I think you will like it, mine is a very nice gun to shoot it's a .62 smoothrifle enjoy the journey, these guns shoot even better whe you get a deal like that  , congrats.

Keep us posted on how you go about repairing that crack. It looks like a good deal if it's a difficult repair - it looks like a FANTASTIC deal if it's a relatively easy repair.

Very nice rifle, price was great. I would leave the crack alone, it will not effect the rifle at all. Many old ones have the same thing and you will never match the stain. Leave well enough alone. Just enjoy. TGP

After I receive the rifle, I plan on removing the barrel and lock to determine the depth of the crack. If the crack extends into the barrel channel, I will probably inlet and epoxy a piece of small diameter steel threaded rod to bridge the crack. I may also inlet and epoxy a piece of stiff wire or rod bent to shape in the front of the interior of lock mortice to bridge the crack. Both of these repairs would be invisible from the exterior. I am not going to do much from the exterior, other than probably working a bit of epoxy into the crack. I agree, the crack is probably not even a problem, but I think those steps will prevent any chance of it worsening. It is barely noticeable, and I really dont think it is a problem at all, especially if I can reinforce the area from inside.

Looks like you got a helluva deal, you lucky *&*&^^##@!!! Just kidding, even though I am jealous I wish you nothing but the best with that beautiful gun. Keep us posted when you get it in your hands. What a great way to make the day a good one. I bet you were pacing around the house a couple inches off the floor for awhile!

LOL I was wondering who won that rifle :applause: ....I am not kidding, I had my finger over the button ready to bid on that gun but wasn't sure what if anything I could do with the crack.
It sure was tempting though!

I seen the auction, and the crack (along with me being broke!) was the only thing that stopped me from bidding.
I think how you plan to reinforce the stock is a great idea.
If I had thought of that fix :hmm: when I first seen the auction -I- might have been waiting for -MY- new gun to arrive!
Congrats on the score
Hope she shoots as good as she looks.
Keep us informed on how it goes.
