Dear Mr Vallandigham - there was a small meaure of tongue-in-cheek in my post there. Right now I am surrounded by Finns [as it should be, I AM in western Finland in the beautiful city of Turku], as indeed I am when back in UK - the HQ of Nokia is just down the road from me.

With such an ethnic diversity readily to paw in the USA, I was certain that somebody would have been able to translate it.

I remain constantly amazed that a country as ethnically diverse as the USA seems to have such a paucity of knowledge of any other language than English, but, as you say, there ya go.

kTac: Your country is hardly the size of Indiana, and the USA is huge by comparison. We have plenty of finnish descendants living in the USA, and even some that still read and speak the languages. However, finding one is not as easy as hollaring out the front door, even in our cities. My grandmother was a first generation Swedish American, and lived in an area on the NW side of Chicago that was mostly Scandinavian, with Norwegian, Swedes, Danes, and Finns, and a few Germans thrown in. My Grandmother was taught Swedish, Norwegian, German and English in the first 3 grades of her school, but that was back in the 1880s.

I asked the question because I own a Puukko knife I bought more than 25 years ago. I do not seen the same knife for sale in any of the ads on the Internet. I do like the knife, and it has done good work for me fleshing a deer skin out, and boning out meat. This knife has a synthetic handle made of some black dull substance. It refuses to get slick when covered with blood or guts, and my hand will not slip. I would like to buy more for gifts to friends and relatives, but can't find them anywhere. Guten Naben.

French, German, and Spanish are regularly taught here - if you had posted in one of those languages you probably would have gotten a reply. Finnish...well, thats not a language with a big presence here. I like it, though.

Well, naturally with such a large Finnish population in America, I was certain that my pearls had been cast on still waters [to mix metaphors], and that one of the many Finnish speakers on this forum would have helped you out.

Just up the way from us in Ontario, on the shores of Lake Superior we have Little Finland, an area where the settlers were from the old country, and the names of the places and road reflects that heritage - Suomilainen Street, Helsingen Street, Rouvaniemi Road and so on.

Anyhow, with copious apologies to those of you who do not seem to speak Finnish [everybody does where I am, but then I am presently in Turku :wink: ], I'll just say that the little quote gives details of the simple yet time-proven construction and use of birch-bark or cork for the handles of this eponymous knife, as well as the neat little fold-over top of the full-length sheath that stops it falling out when cavorting around in the snow chasing the reindeer or Russians [sorry Russians, but you DID get your butts handed to you on plate by an army 1/10th your size].

Lesson has been learnt. I am suitably contrite. :redface:
