This is on a Boxlock, but others are similar.
By just adding some taper or coning to the powder canal ignition should improve.
How deep, well how deep can you get.
Just stay away from the out side of the channel, Don't make it any thinner.

Also using a drop tube to load will pack the canal.

Smack the breech real good 6 or 9 times to settle the powder down under the nipple.

I have pulled the nipple and seen the difference between a 'smack down' and a 'pack down'.

The powder is more compacted with the use of a drop tube.

Of course the use of a drop tube is not always possible, but just want to make you aware that it works better.

Also any improvement to the powder channel also helps.

Good question, look at the black powder cartridge loading tubes.

They pack more powder into a cartridge case, than just pouring in.

Same effect on larger bore guns.

Smaller diameter, a more concentrated flow packs the powder in better.

It works!

<< How is the barrel not a drop tube?? >>>

The barrel after a shot is no longer smooth, surface wise, than a drop tube. And even wiped down first, I'd suspect a little
of the powder to cling to the sides as it falls??
