Hey, I like it. Did you build it all from scratch? It is definitely a one-of-a-kind.

well I'll answer two questions at one time.
yes I built it from scratch in fact I hand built everything but the lock, the barrel is .50 smoothbore and started out as a piece of 1 1/8 round stock the stock is made from cherry that is just oiled and waxed

Were did you get the round stock from? I have been wanting to put together a brass barrel pistol.

Lets just say I borrowed it from the scrap bin from my place of employment :hmm: With my supervisers blessing of course. :winking: :winking:

Would it be possible to get some specifications on the barrel? Say like wall thickness, grade of brass, is the breach plug and tang brass as well? You know that kind of stuff.

Hey Frost, here is a little brass barreled nipple pistol I cobbled up back in the early 70's. And the barrelI is made from the stem of a "frost" free valve. :rotf:

Looks great. The only problem I see is you got the picture backwards, lock is on the wrong side :rotf:

the barrel is a little over 7/8 across the flats making the walls about 3/8" thick, the breach plug was cut from the same round stock and fitted before I cut the flats that way I didn't have to worry about lining things up later  the breach plug is also drilled with a powder well to help take some of the pressure, this is only about a 30g fffg gun. I plan on proof testing the barrel with 50g fffg from a distance this weekend.
As to grade of brass I'll check and let you know

Thanks. I am interested in finding out how the proof test goes. What method do you use for proofing your guns?

Being a southpaw myself I have to disagree with John Taylor. I think the lock is on the correct side.

Hey now, no making fun of my given name. That's a nice little pistol but seeing as it is a frost free pistol, does that mean I'm not allowed to touch it or does it mean that I get one free of charge?

I plan on strapping it down and usin' a long string on the trigger. :haha: :haha:
I never owned a lefty gun so I figgered since I was buildin' one I'd make it a lefty

Frost,
I checked on the brass and it is 360 grade brass stock

C360 material (Free Cutting Brass) is composed of 61.5 percent copper, 35.5 percent Zinc and 3 percent lead.
In it's annealed condition it has a yield strength of 18,000 PSI and a tensile strength of 49,000 PSI.
In its "half hard" condition the yield strength increases to 52,000 PSI and the tensile strength increases to 68,000 PSI.

This compares with 12L14's cold drawn strengths of 60,000 PSI yield and 78,000 PSI tensile.

From this, you can see that it is a good idea to keep the wall thickness on the heavy side and keep the powder loads on the light side if the barrel is made of this Brass material.

Brass (and bronze) can not be hardened by any heat treatment. The condition must be developed in the material by cold rolling processes which are beyond the scope of the home builder so if a person wants to use any of the Brasses or Bronzes make sure they are wrought and not cast.
Also, keep in mind that subjecting a brass part to high temperatures can reduce the materials hardness and strength considerably.

zonie :)

Zonie,
Thanks for the info, when I built the pistol I planned on keeping the load light 20-30g fffg I'm going to take it out and proof it this weekend from a distance with 50g and a tight prb. if It don't hold I can always build a new barrel from steel.:shocked2:
