this is my first black powder gun of any kind. My question is should you load a brass frame remington with a lighter load than you would a steel frame?

The brass frame is not as strong as steel so it might not be a bad idea to down load on the brass frame.I have a 1851 navy .44 that I shoot 30grs.in and it shoots great. What Cal.do you have?

that would be wise to do so. I've had 3 of them and shot max loads w/no problem but did so sparingly. I usually loaded a .357 mag caseful of powder (24grs 3F) for target/plinking load and a felt then ball.and shot hundreds of them with no apparent wear. they shot good.

25 grains of Pyrodex is what I shoot out of my brass frame revolvers and haven't had a problem yet.

Don

A steady diet of max loads is hard on brass frames. If you download a bit, it'll shoot fine for a long time to come. That works out good anyway, because the maximum loads are rarely the most accurate. Generally 20-25 grains is the most accurate in the .44's.

I have a 44 cal., also with black powder do you measure in volume or by weight?
