I'd look into the style of brass tacks that were available as well as "IF" they were available, THEN I'd see if I could actually find 100% brass tacks... I've seen a couple of guns decorated with what turned out to be brass plated tacks... :barf:

LD

For what it's worth, if anyone wants correct, solid brass, square shanked tacks, this outfit has them. Not cheap, though.

It is all in the eyes of the beholder. I wonder what generated the word or idea behind calling something "tacky".

A New England smoothbore rifle for a long hunter from Northern New York persona. You might like the look of the tacks, you might really want to put some on that firearm. You may be looking for folks to say its ok. IMHO they are not pc.
My suggestion, you can always add them later. Live with the rifle as is for a while. In time you may be glad you left them off.

am having a .58 new england smooth rifle built for me and I was thinking about adding some tacks to it....my questions are ...would that be p/c

no

If you disagree then show me a pic of one that has tacks or has had tacks. Tacks were not a universal trade item until many years later.

Okay, now this is just me. I would never get the nerve to put a tack into one of my custom/semi custom guns. The thought makes me cringe. Now putting tacks on a beater gun or even a nice factory gun wouldn't be a problem and I did it once on a beater gun. Made it easier to hold onto. HC/PC? Have no idea.

A little off topic but speaking of beard pulling I have the same problem with the collapsible stock on M4 carbine clones. They always snag a whisker or two n the mechanism.

For the bearded shooter, that stock is nothing short of the Devil's work. Good to hear others suffer from it, as well. :cursing:

Oh, and I wouldn't put tacks on any rifle prior to the percussion era. Just my two pence...

i'd suggest that it is not a question IF guns (or anything else) would have been dacorated with brass tacks, but WHAT have been decorated.

here is what i did to my fowler:

Tacks can be similarly associated with a anti-drug campaign headed up by then first lady Nancy Reagan......

Just Say NO!

I say no also, I like the looks of tacks but it does seem to be a western Indian or mountainman thing,Not so much colonial woodsman

Well Bryon, If you really want to be correct with history, it is very well known and documented that 18th century New Englander's absolutly HATED Tacks. They even dressed up as Indians and went on the war path over tacks on their tea! Started a darn revolution over it! So.....I definitely would refrain from adding tacks to your rifle. :youcrazy: :td:

Well personally I find the idea of decorating a
gun in this way rather "tacksing".
