I use clothes hangers pounded to square stock for my 'plain iron'. Heat and twist with a propane torch.

We have a local crafts store that has brass wire in various sizes. I got some 3/32" brass wire for a fishing net project recently.
 
Here is a rifle I made for a woman who keeps her copper pick on a leather tie on the trigger guard - works for her :v
 
its funny how so much of our simple kit is the same yet different. we all use what is handy, the same as our ancestors would have done
