Depends how well you clean it. There's a brown film of gunk/preservative in the bore that's really tough to get out. Once gone, you'll see improvements in accuracy really quickly.

Bear is right. Clean the preservative out first. It doesn't really begin to break in until that stuff is gone. Takes a bit of elbow grease to get it out too.

Save the elbows & plut the nipple/vent, pour the barrel full of Shooters Choice, let it set about an hour, tip it over & pour it right back into the bottle for later use. Then brush it with a bronze bore brush, swab that out & then Ballistol it really good Insuring you get the vent & nipple coated inside. When ya go shoot swab/clean the Ballistol out & goshoot.

Mine shot 1" groups at 50 yards from day one.....

You need to do a real good cleaning as the others describe. When cleaning take a wire bore brush and wrap it with OO steel wool. Run this in the bore with cleaning solution about 20-30 strokes. This will smooth sharp edges and take out minor burrs that were left in there. Finish cleaning and oil barrel with "non-petrolium oil". I preferr Balistol although there are many others. Veg oil of the wifes works pretty good murphys oil soap is a good one also. Have fun and remember to always clean/reoil after each shooting session. BambiSlayer

200 shots is a good start! there are many opinions on the subject, lapping, fire lapping, conicals, etc. just shoot and have fun.

Aww heck guys come on, why don't any of you just tell him the easy way? Ok here it is, send it to me and i will shoot it until its broke in real good then ship it right back to you with a target.

Yep, mine had a rough spot about 6" in front of the breechplug. I thought I had a bad barrel at first, but I kept cleaning and scrubbing and it eventually just went away. Mine shoots great.

rebel, you forgot to tell him to send powder, balls, patches, and caps. oh, and send a target too. :rotf:

I used 0000 steel wool.It is alot finer and polishes up the bore better.Be sure to use oil with it.Used it on all my muzzleloaders.New or used.

if its not cutting patches due to sharp rifling, it shouldnt take too long.. watch for cut patches and burn thru or blow by and ask how to correct that if it shows up.. find out what size ball it shoots with best and what patch thickness goes with it best,(on paper) order a mold to keep a consistent supply of ammo and you will be well on your way.. dave.

I,am getting about a 6 in group at 25 yard that with 65 gain 70 75 80 85 90 95 100 105 110 of 2ff blackpowder and.535 speer round balls.i don,t know on the patch .cleaning the bore after every shot. and have shot blackpowder for the last 30 year but new to this flintlock .

ok, lets see whats happening.. are you shooting a group with 60 grains, then a group with 70 grains, then a group with 80 grains etc? try a wipe with 1/2 murphy soap oil and 1/2 water, fairly wet on a patch then one dry patch with a fairly tight jag between shots.. dont overwet, or over dry.. run the wet patch up and down the breach untill the crud is gone, then one dry patch.. are you using some lube on the patch?? what do the fired patches look like?? dave..

The first thing I would do is drop the load back to 50 grains and try that. I have a .53 and a .58 that only need 50 grains for a target load. It's a little anemic but is a place to start.

The second thing would be to check the patches. You could be blowing every other patch or so and that could account for your flyers.

The third thing would be to have a friend prime the rifle where you can't see it. Have him not prime every once in a while. This will show if you are flinching from the flash.

A six inch spread at 25 yards is an awful lot. It's difficult to diagnose long distance.
