There were many, earlier, breechloaders as even the Fergusson was 100 years or more, 'behind' the times. There were many 'sporting' rifles and pistols with the same principle made in the 17th century.
: The trigger guard is turned one revolution to the right, to drop the 'block' to below the 'chamber'. The .65 cal.ball was dropped in, rolled forward, then approx 65gr.powder was poured into the chamber, muzzle pointed down, then the guard tured up and locked. The powder that came up on top of the block, was swept over into the pan, frizzen closed, and was then ready to be fired.

The "Hook"-Type thumb latch on the underside of the action is the earliest version, but was well thought of compared to the toggle-linked, light-weight, flexible ones that came later.
: The Hall guns were made in both rifles and smoothbores, with the 1830 era military being .52 cal. smoothbore to take the .525 ball meant for the Harpers Ferry .54 rifles.
