One should also point out the possibility - as was suggested by Ross Seyfried - that the granulation of powders in days gone by may have differed from that of today. He suggested, with some research on the subject, that our current 3f was yesterday's 2f in efficiency. So, back in the day, 2f was very good stuff. While we have great powders today, the Brits were state-of-the-art when it came to black powder.
I use only 3f powder in all my guns, from .36 long rifle, to 12ga shotgun. Prime or main charge.
