I've had several of these child size muskets before. They are typically modelled after the India Pattern Brown Bess and date to the early 1800s. This one in particular is interesting because the lock is a British lock, probably from a dragoon pistol but the pan is a captured French brass pan, probably from the AN XIII pistol. A souvenir from the Revolution or Napoleonic Wars. It is about 50 1/2" total length with a 35" barrel. It's about .62 caliber. Barrel has badly worn through at the muzzle. I assume after some work it would be shootable. A neat piece as it is. $450 plus shipping from 24426. I accept PayPal, cash app, Venmo, Zelle, check or money order.

A bit of an update, I still believe this is a child's musket because it is roughly 1/3 smaller than a genuine Brown Bess but looking at it a bit closer you can see this used to be a better quality piece but over time has been cobbled together. The barrel tang screw has a slot at the end and is held in with a wooden wedge. Removing it you can see it originally took a screw. The lock is tight on the stock but there's a gap between the pan and barrel. Some of this can be closed with a bit of work but it looks like it should have a replacement pan. The brass just doesn't work or not any more. It's very worn out. What I thought was the remains of a crown on the lock is actually an elephant so the lock is East India Company. The whole musket may be. With these relatively simple repairs I would think it would be a $600 gun but it's not as good as I initially thought so I'm dropping it to $400. Just wanted to be clear on what you are getting.

The locks with the "WARRANTED" and elephant were used in the African trade, I think starting ca. 1820s, but you see them all the way through the 1890s or beyond. The barrel looks like it was never proofed, or if it was, then the marks are long gone. I love the brass cartridge used for the tip of the ramrod. Any clues as to where this originated? African (colonial) bring back maybe? I'm interested. Thanks!

There are a couple spots in the barrel where there may have been proofs. I'm not really sure. I would expect it to be European made and modified in Africa. Maybe Egypt since it would likely be easy to find French stuff amongst the British there?

Thanks for the reply. Gotta pass on it for now, but it really is an interesting piece. Somebody sure did get a lot of use out of it and for a very long time! Could very well be North African use.

When your side is still muzzleloading, and you are using a spent, brass cartridge from an opponent as a jag....you know you are in deep trouble. Or you are expendable backup on safari. What a story that gun could tell ! If only.
Still very cool. SW
