Does anyone know if there’s a modern/repro mainspring that will fit an original India pattern gun made in 1779? Thanks.

The Pedersoli Brown Bess Mainspring is a different shape than the originals, the lower leg has a more downward bend. This is because the steel they use in Europe isn’t the same type of spring steel that they cast from in the USA, its a type of spring steel used on musical instrumentS.

Any casted spring used in a Pedersoli gun will need to be fitted to the lock and lock mortise in the stock.

Jim Caso in VT will make a very good replacment Spring out of 1070 / 1095 stock. A forged spring will last much longer too.

Making a spring from 1075 or 1095 stock isn’t the most complicated thing in the world, making it look pretty is the hard part. Getting the bevels right and the foot to have the right arch. I’ve made some springs that work, just not pretty.
