Pedersoli's Carbine Bess works well for shooting. I have one and have won several matches with it. It has a traditional breechplug not a "patent" type breech, it throws a good spark and is quite rugged. The only drawback you will find that it has an extremely heavy trigger pull. You will have to get someone who knows what they are doing to lighten the trigger pull if you find it to be objectionable.
The styling of the Bess Carbines was a little more fluid than the full sized Bess, which went through a lot fewer changes. There were many short runs of carbines that looked somewhat similar to the Pedersoli Carbine. If I recall correctly, there is one at the Frazier museum that looks a lot like the Pedersoli Carbine. The biggest drawback to historical authenticity is that almost all British Carbines were 16 gauge not 11 gauge. Thousands of carbines were brought into this country during the Rev War for use by Light Troops, Artillery, Engineers and Cavalry.
I understand that there is a 12 gauge carbine in the museum at Kings Mountain. So it is possible that even the caliber was sometimes (if rarely) up for a change.
