I used to own an original 3rd model brown bess. The flint hammer on mine was a so called reinforced, double-throat type. I have also seen many that have the goose-neck style. Mine was dated 1805 on the buttstock. Does anyone know when the change was made from gooseneck to reinforced? Or vise-versa? There was a great article on Besses in the American Rifleman 1 or 2 years ago that I think answered this. I saved the mag but can't find it now. Getting old I guess. Thanks for any help out there.

The article in Man at Arms Feb 2000, said the change to a stronger ring necked cock came in late 1809, Yours may have an upgrade to an older Bess after it needed it.

The lovely name for these can also be "double-throated cock" which sounds rather interesting.
