Many old guns are brown, however, we find they were blue in protected areas. The browning is a result of poor cleaning and age.
this is not to say browning wasn’t used in the past, very popular in early nineteenth century.
Since we are so used to brown old guns we expect it to be brown, even brand new. But blue or white was very common, and contrary to popular belief white barrels won’t rust if cared for.

It is WAY too easy to overheat a single or double barrel shotgun and have the results ronaldrothb49 mentioned when first doing such work.

However, with a thorough cleaning of the metal parts with acetone, you can rust blue over the browned metal parts, as it works with 212° F boiling point of water.

Does it need to be 212*F? At altitude here water boils at around 205-208*F. or no difference -- just boiling?
