Howdy all
I have a T/C renegade that I'am redoing and I was wondering if I browned everything but the case hardened colored lock would this look okay, I've been trying to find some pic's to see what this would look like but can't find any.

Or would it look better to brown the lock also, and can you brown it since it's been case hardened.
Thx for the help

I just finished a Renegade flinter browned everthing except the lock, sights, thimbles(hope that what you call them, they hold the ramrond in place under the barrel. gun came out great, almost forgot left the tang screw in factory blue, all other screws were browned also the steel butt plate is brown.I also stip the stock and refinish it with tung oil. :redthumb:

Was that a cold brown or a hot brown formula that you used? I am always curious to find out what different methods people are using and how successful are the results.

Are you pleased with your finished work? That is the best gauge of what works best. (Though I like methods that produce results "faster", sometimes "quicker isn't better".)

I don't think either blueing or browning will work on color-case-hardened steel, although I may be wrong. I've never attempted it myself, as I figured the abundance of extra carbon on the surface of the metal would not allow "rusting" to take place easily.

But in spite of what I said, it "might" be possible, as a color-case-hardened surface can indeed rust from neglect.

Would someone with a little more experience and know-how care to add some better information? I'd like to know also.

I used LMF cold brown :redthumb:ing system the longer it sit with the chemical the more rust and then card with bluejean material.I would say about a total week for barrel and parts stuff works great ,just remember apply the chemical as light as possible dampen all parts to be browned.I made a barrel holder a pale of hot water about 3 ft. from the barrel and a light bulb, all cover with a sheet of plastic to increase the humidity.

Thx for the info Lonewolf and Hillbilly, since no one else seems to have any idea on this subject ::, I'll have to do some testing on my own and I'll gladly share my results with ya'll :thanks:

Yes you can brown the T/C lock. I did it to my Hawkin and it looks very good next to the browned barrel..
I used LMF browning solution..

Thats exactly what I was wanting to know and nice looking gun. :) Is that the t/c tang sight your shooting??? If it is could you give me the part number for the front sight I gots to have me one of those.

I ordered the browning solution yesterday and emailed Green mounation today about getting an IBS barrel in 40cal in the white to brown myself. I just about have the stock redone and getting ready to start on the furniture.

Thx Killit

Killitgrillit,

Yes that is the T/C Tang peep I have mounted on it. The front site is a Lyman 17a Globe site with an aftermarket fine crosshair insert, available from Brownells. I forgot to mention that BC's Blueing remover will take the case hardning color off the lock very easily. Good luck, and post some picts when your done...

I need some help I found the lyman globe front sight but I need to know the height to get or which model 17a to get to use the factory tang peep sight. HELP

killitgrillit

I don't remember exactly what site I orderd, I know that it was not the high sight. I orderd a lower one I believe that it was around a 1/2" high. The lower the front sight the more distance you should get, and I like to have that gun sighted in at 100yds. The T/C tang sight is adjustable but I don't like it all the way lowerd as that stock does not have enough drop in it and its hard on my cheek with heavy loads. If I remember right my reasoning for the lower front sight was that I would have to raise my rear site which in turn would allow me to raise my cheek from the stock a little... I hope this helps.. :results:

Killitgrillit:

I did that to my GPR .54. Used rust and blue remover to clean everything off, Laurel Mountain Forge Degreaser and Brown to refinish everything but the forend cap, that I used Brownells stainless steal colored Teflon bake on finish to look like the pewter on the original. Looks real nice, now just need to add a silver Hawkin cap box.

Thx for all the info Gents, I have BC blue and rust remover coming and the LMF degrease/browning agent.
I'am going to start on the furniture first and go from there.
I'am going to get a different barrel for it but can't decide between .40cal and .45cal (mostly range work and small game) I use my .50cal roundballer for deer.
I called green mountain to see if they would sell me a IBS barrel system in the white so I could brown it and they said now way.
So looking at TOTW right now and thinking about scratch building one.
Thx for the info
