I've got some nice woven straps laying in the gun room, been meaning to put them on some of my horns for far too long. The question is are buckles on horn straps authentic. I don't recall ever having seen one but I have some decent buckles I got from Avalon Forge almost 40 years ago left over. They are 1" square, plated, that he had patinaed in a fire, I believe he still sells them. Anyway should I use them or forget it?

Yup, I realize it's mine to do with as I wish. :) I got thinking about it and realized I had never seen one or a reference either so I thought I'd ask if anyone else had. I have a few horns with non-adjustable straps and never felt the need for one, probably overthinking. I had a couple of hunting pouches without adjustment too and they never were a problem.

I like a buckle on my leather horn straps as I like to wear them high, and they need adjusting out in winter. Buckles on bags were common enough so to think there was some rule for the “other strap” never having a buckle doesn’t seem logical. I like them. Careful where you put them if you lean up against trees when squirrel hunting, etc.

I just made a cheap and easy horn strap from an old pair of suspenders. The horn previously had just a leather thong. Certainly more comfortable, and adjustable to boot. :)...

My one leather horn strap was made with several slits to adjust length by using the desired slit over the butt (acorn) of the horn. Excess just hangs. Very easy and simple.

Exactly

My horn has a staple in the butt for the strap. Well when I don my cold weather gear, the horn is then pretty high up under my armpit, so that won't do. Either "they" put on a long strap in the winter, and then shortened it in the summer, and replaced it next winter, OR..., they adjusted it some way.

SO...., I installed a leather loop around the staple and put a small metal button on that. The back end of my strap has a couple slits to that I can move the button and thus adjust the length of the strap, and the excess just dangles.

I would not use a buckle with a woven strap, leather yes. The fewer buckles you have hanging from your shoulder the better, things get caught on buckles.
