If you start getting shots where the hammer ends up at half cock after firing your nipple needs replacing.

I had a 54 cal conical load blow the hammer back with a NEW nipple at less than Max. listed load ( 425 gr, 100gr FFg).

I backed off 10 gr and never got close to the listed max load.

Hammer spring is in good shape so thats not the cause........

I shoot conicals (Minie Balls) in my 1861 rifled musket because that's what it was designed to shoot. Right now I've only fired original style 525gr Minies in it with 50gr 2f. I do have some Hornady bullets and Buffalo Bullet Co. bullets with what amounts to a "dimple" in the base. I'm going to try to figure out a good load for them next.

I shoot PRBs out of my early Virginia flinter because that's what it was designed to shoot.
