Hello Everyone;
I have a Tanned Buffalo Robe from a 8 Year old Bull. Very Thick Hair and good quality hide.
This has been rolled up (Hair side in) and hanging
in my basement for 5 or 6 years.
What are some of the projects or items you all have made. I thought of a Flap for my Possible Bag.
Any Ideas would be helpful.
Thanks,
Don

Hello, A robe like that is worth some money if well tanned and not damaged as is. I have bought pieces of robes that were damaged in processing for projects such as soleing witer mocs with the hair out to keep from slipping on the ice and snow and to use larger pieces for chair cushions on a camp chair versus sheepskiun. You can use it for any hair on leather project. I would use it as is as a robe or make one more cold weather coat.
as usual,

I have two hides and have used one to make several quivers and several knife sheaths..I`m aslso thinking of making a possible bag or two out of it..

I would think that Buffalo robe would have more value whole, than cut up in pieces to use for other things. Cutting is down when there is damage to the hide, and you want to salvage what is left. If you have seen the cost of a buffalo hide with hair on these days, It would make you cry to think of anyone cutting up a perfectly good hide to make seat covers!

Just my $.02.

DITTO , If you find a buyer for the complete hide you will make enough to aquire heaps of crafting material. Maybe post it in the classifieds. I for one may be interested. Wild Eagle

I agree!! I wouldn't think of cutting up a buffalo robe for projects. If you want scraps for projects, look up Moscow hide and furs (Moscow ID) or Ednise furs in St. Maries ID, and buy scraps from them. I have bought fur scraps from both of them before, and the hide pieces are really good. Also, after patching some of them together, you cant tell that they have been sewn together, just match the pieces with similar length hair and direction together. You have to remember, a full buff rode was worth quite a bit back then, as it was usually customary to split the robe for tanning to make it easier. It was also common to sew pieces together to make items because of the scraps that were trimmed off in the tanning process. Just my 2 cents worth, but I'd bead/buy a blanket strip or paint it and wear/display it with pride! I have one hide sittin at home that will get a good beaded strip when I get back from college this spring! It's your decision, but I'd find out what the going rate is for a buff hide and then consider (or not) to pull out the knife.
