If you have never built one, I suggest you buy a "parts set" from Jim Chambers, TOW, Tip Curtis, Wayne Dunlap, etc. and not start with a blank. Do 3-4 like that & then build from a blank as this way you will not be overwhelmed & etc.
i agree with birddog- i had two under my belt before i tried making a stock from a blank and had i not had that experience, i would have been completely overwhelmed by the whole deal. in addition to the books mentioned, you might want to check out some videos. Chambers makes a good one, and there are several at a site called[url] technicalvideorentals.com[/url] (or somesuch). Track of the Wolf also has videos for sale.
