I have a old ramrod. I want to use the ends off it on the new one. How do i go about removing the ends without scratching or destroying them?

I don't understand the worry about scratching the brass. :idunno: Oh, well. Just take out the pins and dig the old wood out best you can. Burning the wood out can burn the brass. DAMHIK

If the ends have heavy walls burning will work. If the walls are thin then removing the pins (if present) and then drilling out with small drill bits and "picking " is the way to go. :idunno:

It does not take a lot of heat to burn the ramrod end enough to remove it
go slow heating it lightly and evenly

no need for a cutting torch or forge.

Lots of good ideas. Here's mine: Drill out any cross pins and see if the brass ends will pull off. Usually they will if they haven't been glued on recently. Over time, the glue will dry out and come loose and make your job easy. If the glue is still holding, cut off the brass ends and use a Dremmel tool to remove the wood from the brass ends. Usually when you get the majority of the wood out, you can use something like a small screwdriver or ice pick to dig out the rest. Once it is clean, it is ready to put onto a new rod. :hatsoff:

I would knock the pics out using a small punch. Then wrap a small piece of leather around the brass end for grip and protection, then get a pair of pliers and grip the leather wrapped brass and gently twist to see if it will loosen up..if so you can work it back and forth until it slides off. IF not, then you can do as others have suggested and drill the wood out and pick out the remaining small pieces.

If it is old, it is probably just pinned. Just punch the pins out & pull the tip off.
If it won't pull off, it could have glue under it as well. So take a heat gun like ya strip paint with or a propane torch & just heat the end of the tip, take a pair of pliers & gently grab & pull while twisting the tip off the rod.

If ya didn't want it off, the dang thing would probably fall off ! :idunno:
