I have an adjustable marking tool that I made that works good, along the same principle. But the wood block and nail are great.

I see a picture of a finished trade gun in near future.walt
Hopefully ! Should be two about the same time ....My N.W. Gun , the " Problem Child " and the Trade gun I bought and am rebuilding . I only have to make a ramrod , ramrod pipes , inlet pipes and then start sanding on the rebuild ... Mine , or I should say the NW trade gun , I'm having frizzen troubles and of course its browning ....which can be two days or ten ! We'll see !

Well ....The " Problem Child " was sparking well but ....I have a fellow interested in her , I know I know ....and the bottom of the frizzen half sole was very thin and hanging sorta so I broke it off . if she stayed with me I'd have just left it but .... I can't sell it with it looking like that . Pic of the half sole after I took it off should be in post in a minute ... So ....another piece of file anneal it , bring it up to orange and forge it flat , anneal it again , drill it and fit it to the frizzen , rivet it on , really fought me ! then ....cutting and trimming of the carbon steel to fit the frizzen .

Here's some videos of a new H.E. Leman NW Trade Gun built by Doc White of GRRW.CA.
This is a copy of an original seen back in the late 1960's in several museum displaces around Denver CO.

Shoots very good when you consider there's no rear sight.

You Gentlemen talking NW Trade Gun's bring to mind a book I wrote about this subject back in 1995 with Curly G. and Charley H. 's suggestions.

"Success In The North American Fur Trade" recommended by the US Library of Congress for those studying the North American Fur Trade. Now in it's third printing (on Kindle/Amazon listing)..

Description:
From the mid 1600's to the late 1900's, living history and muzzleloader shooters have been the main topic among those interested in history, now revived in this century.

The only difference in some cases is the change in improvement in design over the years. Some of the largest quantities being supplied in the mid 1700's in the Eastern part of North America was with the American Colonies being involved. New York State alone had trade within the colonies as well as into Canada from late 1640's to mid-1850's according to supply records from HBC and the Northwest Co., by the mid 1700's they were providing a supply of repair parts and service at several of the trading posts within the U.S., as well as Canada through their traders".

We will try and provide you with the most accurate documented information from our research done over a 50-year period in this series of books. Thank you for your time.

Not going to go into the entire story but .....this $#@ d@mn lock ! Fought me and fought me . Half soled it twice and then two other frizzens , one hardened from the factory and still ...no spark. Finally ...I converted it to bridleless and two frizzens later , many times hardening it , completely different than usual ....I final got the d@mn frizzen hardened and the lock sparking . What a pain .....anyway ....here are some lock pics .....then after that gun pics . Just got done shooting it , mostly blanks , two dozen times ...working good . I havr to weld up the Allen head screw holding the frizzen but , thats later , always something .......SHEEW !!!!!!
