I have been fretting about this possibility and haven’t even started that build!

my first few builds I meticulously measured and drew lines on the stock where the channel was and where the bridge between the barrel channel and ramrod channel was, but after I did a few, I got cocky and relied on the lock geometry to line it up if the pan was level with the barrel. I did a very similar thing. now I draw on the stock on every one and squint my eyes when I drill that front lock bolt

Oh , I know but it was just a dumb @$$ mistake ... My lines are on there ...just ...too much coffee , EVERYTHING was going wrong , things were dropping off the bench , I was getting irritated , and company was going to be here in an hour and I wanted to get SOMETHING accomplished before they arrived .... so ....big screw up ....but I did fix it so , like you said ...
... its character mark now ! LOL ....S hit happens . :) ....Ok ....Everyone's gone now so ....let's get my trigger pinned and fit ...get this sucker to be an operating piece of equipment soon ... maybe even LOP measured and the buttplate set !!! Goody goody goody goody goody !!! ;)

actually I was gonna cheat, make 2 tang bolts, one a little longer so I could screw a sight onto the thread that was above the tang and a could switch out the tang bolt to make her look like they did, or wing shoot.
no need to cheat, the book Fur Trade and Treaty has pix of original trade guns with rear sights that also gives their dimensions.
my cousin in Louisiana has that book at the moment or I'd cite it for you.

Cool l to see your progress. I pumped em up enough to cut the butt stock off to length over the weekend. Slowly getting the butt plate on. Measure 20 times and then measure 10 more times.

Yep ....lots of original trade guns with rear sights on them . They were added later but it was very common and it helps a lot esp. at longer ranges . Mine will certainly have a rear sight on it .
