Hi there again. Possibly getting my first flinter tomorrow so I wanted to make something. Found a used one, but someone is ahead of me, and can't really afford a new one right now. A while ago I saw somewhere the instructions on the net to build a sort of holder for patched round balls. It was a rectangular piece of something in which somehow the balls were seated ready for the shove down the chimney. Would a small piece of nylon with .50" holes be good enough for something like this? I tried to search but the search function was down. Any pics, plans or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to you.

You mean something like this?

I found this and more using "bullet block" in the search engine.

Would nylon work? Sure. If that is what you have.
Most of the folks here would say wood is more traditional sense nylon wasn't invented until the 1940s but, whatever floats your boat.

If you don't have a block of nylon, buying a 1/2 X 2 X 5 or 6 inch long piece of hardwood at a home improvement type store would be easier to machine because it's easily drilled.

I would make the holes in the block about 1/32 inch bigger than the bore of the rifle/pistol so it would hold the patched bullet but not deform it too much.

Of course, as .450 + .040 (about 2 patch thicknesses) would be about .500 that would work for a .45.

For a .50 caliber gun, .500 + .040 is close to 17/32 diameter but that is an odd size for a low cost wood working bit so I would again use a 1/2 inch drill and sand the hole out to get the fit.

a 54 caliber would use a .580 diameter. 9/16 is .562 so that might work OK.

Some of these blocks are just a hole for the ball and patch.
Some of them have a counterbored recess on the back side to fit over the end of the barrel and align the patch/ball with the bore automatically.
Either way works.

Good Luck to you.

Thanks all for your replies. Unfortunately I did not get the flinter as someone else had paypal'd the seller before I got a chance to even see the gun :(. The quest now continues in my search for a used gun, unless funds turn good. So in the meantime I will slowly get/make my traditional accessories. Thanks again.

For future caliber loading blocks...

A piece of oak from a pallet would be a nice starting point for a traditional wood bullet board.
