Guys I shoot a traditions Hawken woodsman with a 1/48” barrel

is it necessary to have a “recipe” for lube or can I just use Crisco? I swear some guys make things more complex just because they are bored and need something to do… but, if there is a notable difference, that’s one thing

Crisco, not the best but will work. I started using Crisco. There is an infinite number of things to use. Spit works great but only for short term, not really for hunting because it will dry out.

Just buy a can of Mink Oil from TOTW & you will have a lifetime supply. Works very well in the cold. Crisco is a greasy mess, especially in warm weather. As cheap as Mink Oil is & as good as it is, making your own concoction is a waste of time & energy, IMHO.

Good info thank you. I’ll avoid the crisco because I shoot a decent amount in summer recreationally. I’ll order some mink oil

I like using mink oil to hunt with in the colder weather, but as far as summer shooting goes, I think a guy can do better....with less problems. Using a liquid lube in the summer can work great for you as it cleans out a lot of the barrel crud when you load the next load and saves you from having to swab the barrel between shots. I can shoot a match and never bother swabbing for the whole match...and win regularly. I just don't like using the liquid when it has to be loaded for a long time.....like when out hunting.

you’re calling mink oil a liquid??
No...I was just comparing it to a liquid. It's more the consistency of crisco or something like that. There are lots of different patch lubes out there and guys use all kinds of different ones.....but a guy just figures out which one works best for him for a certain situation.

Two points. Lube for bullets is one thing, there are grease lands, between which
a thicker lube that will stick is better. I like a beeswax / tallow lube for this and for
revolver-use in packing chamber mouths. Now a patch lube can be a thinner
liquid such as spit, ballistol/moose milk or ? Crisco is for when you have nothing
better to use, in a pinch, in heat it will turn liquid faster than beeswax lubes.

I make my Moose Milk with 1 part Ballistol
and 3 or 4 parts water . This also makes a good bore cleaner !
Lots of guys use similar types of lubes, and I certainly agree with them too. I have used Murphy's oil soap mixed with Windex for many years, and it's done good for me and I use it to clean the gun with as well. To each his own and lots of the mixes probably do a good job.

Mink oil leather grease is good. Walmart......The first error folks make using grease lubes is , they don't use it sparingly. Put the correct thickness patch on a flat surface after the grease is applied , next , w/ finger tip , rub excess grease off the patch. load. shoot , repeat... Works best for calibers .54 and under. Doesn't seem to make any difference in cal. over .54.. Just an observation...........oldwood

The mink leather treatment I got from Wally World had silicone additives in it. Crapped up the barrel pretty bad. It took a brass brush and a lot of elbow grease to clean it out.
Pure mink tallow (like the stuff from TOTW is a great choice for patch lube.
When you buy the stuff - pay very close attention to any additives - some of that stuff is not your friend.....
On the positive side - that stuff from Wally works great on my old hunting boots.

I always used the round patches you could buy, which I believe were called wonder patches, I am not sure this is the correct name but ,"wonder" was in the name. Does anyone know what they lubricated their patches with?

Wonder Lube , 1000 + , Also , pure mink lube works fine also. Lotsa places sell it including TOTW. If your pre lubed patches are a little dry , the mink can be applied over the pre lube , just rub off the excess. One thing , best to not use pre lubed patches , bought the year before or older.

Get the can of mink oil from TOTW. It's all I use anymore, summer and winter. In Wisconsin we get hot humid summers and cold winters, works all year long. Put some in a empty cap tin to carry in shooting pouch. I use it with both rifles and smoothbores.
