Has anyone here on the forum expiriences with the bullettesttube. I read about it in Sam Fadala's Blackpowder Handbook. It is for testing the effect of bullets on soft targets. Look here:

I have seen people go to great lengths to make fancy test media, but I use old phone books or catalogs soaked in water and contained in cardboard boxes. They give you a pretty good idea and you can peel the pages apart as you go back to "read" the tale of the projectile travel.

None of it is truly scientific as the bodies that you plan to use the bullet on are all more variable than the testing media.

The US military once used sides of beef to test. That was when they selected the .45 ACP which is enjoying a rebirth of sorts.

i like to use scrub oaks to assess penetration. there are lots of them on my farm and they are "free media." I try to find one with a 3 inch diameter, and i shoot it from whatever distance i think i will be shooting. pass thrus indicate plenty of power, as i think you would be surprised to see all the rounds a little sapling will stop. Obviously you have to use the same width and type of wood, which is why i choose oak. a pefect example is even an arrow will fully pentrate a sumac tree, but will not even sink to the end of the ferrule in oak. just my way of doing it. ballistic gel and all that other stuff is outrageously priced. also note, i am testing penetration, nothing else.

I once had to explain to my wife why there was a perfectly expanded 45 bullet in the swimming pool. Now I stick to the wet news paper method. For fun you can put things in front of the box, scrap leather, cloth, brush, etc. to see how they effect the bullets expansion.

Gallon milk jugs filled with water and lined up three or four deep work well too.

When I started back in the 70s I would just use a 2x4, I figured if it would penetrate that, it would do fine on deer.

With a .45 ball and 75grs fff, never had a problem.

Looks like another twist on ballistic gelatin. Good illustration of a crush cavity and penetration.

I shot a deer once with a round ball from my .54..it died on the spot. That is all the testing I need to do. :rotf:

I figure if the manufactures publish reloading manuals it is for a purpose, that meaning they did the testing so I could shoot more.
