 A recipe for disaster in my book!

Make a cardboard pattern to transfer the shape and general size to do a transfer to the handle. The say a prayer for steady hands and............!

In other words you just keeping taking away till it fits and hope you are going slow enough as too not take away too much in the wrong place, and you hear yourself go oh, oh,$&*&#$*!!!!!!!!!
 See simple :idunno:

There was a post over on the ALR board that showed how to do it but after several searches I can't find it.

Basically, you bend your tabs out a little and inlet the cap first.

Once seated start bending the tabs in and inlet them a little at a time.

The most important thing to remember is that the tabs are retained by filing chisel like points onto their ends that are secured under the wood so do not inlet the very ends. When you get there you will have to slide the cap back a little and cut relief cuts under the wood for the ends to slide into.

If that's not to clear just ask. J.D.

Jack Brooks gave info. on how to do this in an "ask the master" section of a past muzzle blast mag.

Some builders form them from sheet brass. Google: forming a kentucky pistol butt cap and look at the fifth link down titled "making a pistol butt cap from scratch" and there's a good picture tutorial.

I don't know if this is how the originals were made or not, but I would guess that they were forged from scratch. Most parts for muzzleloaders were made to fit the stock, not vice versa.

I have made these before but I was wondering how
the origionals were made...There had to be a
neat way of doing it because so many were made by
so many countries...My goal was to use a router
because I have had so much experience with them
and patterns and templates...
