anyone ever use cow horn for a butplate?i was thinking the tip of the horn could be the top of plate in the upper rear for shoulder .horn could be cut to also fit top af cheek and drop down the end of stock just like a brass one ?????

Maybe on a so called barn gun, otherwise I don't think I would do it. Possibly some types of fowlers.

Ha, that's a good one. A cow horn on a barn gun. Seems fitting- the cow's right next to the gun!

OK, I grew up on a dairy farm and am a bit twisted with barn humor. I am thinking of designing a barn gun with all kinds of critter parts on it.

Ok, more serious! I think it would work and be fun to try. Have seen antler used for the heel- why not horn?

I used antler for the butt-end of my sliding wooden patchbox and the ram rod tip. When I get the nerve up and find a good antler piece I'll go for a muzzle cap.

I have a piece of horn that I split and somewhat flattened that I was going to use as a buttplate on mt Carolina smoothrifle but never got that far as the wood stock looked kinda nice...I may do it someday, I was hipeing to heat, bend and form the horn to the wood then final fit and inlet.
