Its ridiculous how much fun I've had shooting this rifle. Off a solid rest at 100yds its shooting 2" and sub-2" groups with boring regularity. The trigger has got too much creep in it, and I'm hoping the Deerslayer trigger set I ordered will tighten it up a little further.

One of the best purchases I've made in years.

That's great news! But not a surprise.

If you really want to add to your fun, dink around with reduced loads for close range plinking and especially head-shooting small game. Both my 50 and 54 cal GPRs really thrive on 30-35 grains of 3f under the same patch/ball combo that works for high vel loads. Best of all, with my rifles sighted in dead-on at 75 yards with full loads, the reduced loads print very close to dead on at 25 yards. Absolutely deadly for mushing bunny heads.

Another couple of bonuses- I find I shoot offhand a lot more and get lots more practice at shorter ranges. And if you're recovering your lead balls and remelting, you really cut your costs when using about 1/3 as much powder.

I'm just saying....

I've honestly been shocked at just how accurate it is. I mean, its more accurate than all but two M1's I own. And amazingly flat shooting considering its a prb. Most of the group size is horizontal, and given the frequent inch, inch and half groups that show up, I'm inclined to think a solid inch of that group size is me instead of the rifle. I may pick up a Lyman peep sight down the road just to see what she can really do.

I just got an email from RE Davis and the new trigger group will arrive this week. I'm thinking about putting some Brownell's boiled linseed oil on it to redden the wood up a bit. I don't know why, but after a lot of M1 and '03 stocks, I can tell you, it does in days what other brands take months and years to do.

I may try the reduced loads. I don't shoot many critters anymore, but the wild hogs are making a nuisance of themselves again. They might see some lead hear in the near future.

By the way, did you try any Wipe Out foaming cleaner yet? I'm telling you, it hates copper and smokeless fouling with a passion.

I haven't had a chance to try the Wipe Out. The local shop had run out. If I want some right away I pay shipping, but if I wait till his normal bulk shipments arrive in April I don't pay shipping. Looking forward to it though, and thanks for the heads up!

I got a GP flinter last Christmas from these guys:
ThridGen
They are evidently getting out of the Lyman GP business and, are cutting prices to sell.
Check it out.

Yes, the English flints are the way to go with leather holding them.

I believe I bought the last Lefty Lyman they had. Thanks for the Link. Saved me a bunch a Money from what Track of the Wolf wanted....

To bad they didnt have a RH 54 Flint Lock I would have bought it to go with my 54GPR precussion especially at these prices.

i agree 100 % with you here . i read the posts after i got mine and drilling out the vent plus coning it made it as fast as a percussion or maybe better . and that shipping grease IS a bear to get out but its worth the effort
