Hey Guys...new here se be kind :) I am heading to purchase some BP? What should I purchase? I have a new Lyman .50 Deerstalker. Should I buy 3f, 4f, or both? Any info? Also any information on what might shoot best out of this gun. Thanks!!!!

Many people shoot 3F in a .50, but I have always, for many, many years, used 2F in anything larger than .45.
: Contrary to most, I find 2F to shoot cleanly in all guns I use it in, including the .45 in years past. I also use tighter than normal combinatons of ball & patch than many people, it seems. The snug combinations help keep things clean, shot to shot.
: Oh yeah - forgot about the priming - I use 4F for priming as I find it faster than 3F. I see it is in vogue to say that there is no difference even down to 2F, but my friend and shooting companion with 35years of shooting Flinter's says 4F is faster in all his guns - and all are custom rifles and smoothbores with properly timed locks. The pan going off is about the same, but the actual main charge ignition is faster due to a hotter more violent flash - or so it seems that's the reason - even in the Brown Bess, 4F is faster.

FFFg should work fine in your gun for both the main charge and the priming. If you look through past threads in this (Flintlock) section, you'll see that most folks don't notice a difference between FFg, FFFg and FFFFg for priming purposes. I personally prime my flintlocks with whatever powder I'm using for the main charge (either FFg or FFFg). If you do buy some FFFFg for priming the pan, do NOT use it for your main charge! NEVER use FFFFg in your bore!!! :shocking: Other than that, HAVE FUN! :thumbsup:

FFg is all I use in my .50 and .54 for the main charge. I usually prime with FFg, but when hunting I use FFFFg. Just a little paranoid, I guess. I only ever primed with FFg in my Bess, but that would throw a bushel o'sparks with a big ol' 9/8 size flint.

:m2c:
I always prime with Goex 4F from a little pocket pan primer that dispenses exactly 3.0grns each time;
I use Goex 3F in .45/.50/.54cal
I use Goex 2F in .58/.62cal

FYI, JJPyrotechnics in Moscow PA delivers a case of Goex to your door for $227, and they'll mix granulations...ie: you could specify 7 cans 2f, 16cans 3F, 2 cans 4F or any variations you might think you'll use

Do you have a web site or a phone number for JJPyrotechnics? I am in need for 2F, 3F and 4F powder.
