Cabelas Blue Ridge in 54 cal

Sounds as though you have your head screwed on really straight. Take your time, check things out, and get what you really want.

We're dealing with friends right now who are poster children for buyer's remorse, and they're a perfect example of the other way things can turn out. They just bought a camper used without a lot of checking around. Fully paid for it but hadn't even taken delivery when they found another in better shape, with better features, and for about 15% less. Ouch.

Frontier direct from Pedersoli and Blue Ridge from Cabelas are quite a ways apart.

I hope you mean in price, as mine wasn't different when it came to product. It looked like the one on the Pedersoli page, and like one I saw at a gunshow in a box. Not the same thing as a Frontier DELUX Rifle, to be sure, and the Hatfield version was better wood, with a high polished barrel with a deep blue, but the Blue Ridge and the standard Frontier are the same rifle. :wink:

The nice thing about the Frontier (imho) is that the .54 comes in a slow twist rate barrel of 1:65. The Lyman GPR comes in a slow twist rate too.

Admittedly it's been some years since I compared, but I thought the Frontier had better wood, browned bbl. All the same now?

I have one of the .54cal flintlocks and love it. Out of the box,windage was perfect but front blade was about a mile to tall. The only thing that is a bit strange is that the jaws of the cock are not dead center of the frizzen. Not a deal breaker though. Also, what ever finish they use on the stock is very easy to scuff. I have two Japanese dixie mountains that have been all over the place on hunting trips and are 30+ years old that have less scratches. I'd say go for it.

I bought the 50 cal version at a Cabela's Bargain Cave in the early 90's. IIRC, I paid about $225 for it. Decent, but not great, rifle . . . I just haven't shot it for a while.

I finally got down to Cabelas today. Nice day out for a drive. The store had the flinter for 50 bucks off the regular price. I have a bunch of gift cards, but I just didn't like the feel and the narrow butt. I shopped an hour with my wife and fondled it again before I left. On my short trial, I did not like the feel. All personal taste, but it was not for me.

I ordered the Blue Ridge from Cabela's, Summer of 16. When it arrived, in the box was a Frontier. I just shrugged it off, figured they were the same gun with a different name. To me they kinda sorta resemble the Hatfield.

The Blue Ridge and Frontier are basically the same rifle with the difference being the Blue Ridge’s barrel is blued and the Frontier’s barrel sports a brown finish. Yes they are replicas of the Hatfield.

Actually I believe Hatfield ordered them from Pedersoli, only they had better wood than a standard Frontier, and a machine polished barrel before it was blued, plus the name "Hatfield" engraved on the color case hardened lock.

I seriously doubt that an original rifle was "copied" to create the rifle that Hatfield sold at the end of that company's run, and it had a color case hardened lock, a wood screw in the lock, and two ramrod thimble and screw assemblies to hold the barrel into the stock. :wink:

I don't know if Ted Hatfield ordered guns or parts from Pedersoli or not. I do know that I visited his shop in St. Joe, Mo. and they were making stocks on a duplicating machine then. That was a long time ago! Greg
