I've got a chance at either one in .54 caliber. I like the set trigger on the hawken but do they shoot as good as the trade rifle. I realize Invest Arms builds them both. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ryan

I don't know about the Trade Rifle, but I have the Hawken and it's a very accurate shooter, with a sweet, crisp and light trigger. On the downside, it's quite picky about the load you feed it. Mine doesn't like any load of FFFG that I've tried. It does shoot exceptionally well with FFG though, once I found a load that it likes. If I go over or under that load, the groups open up a bit.

If at all possible I would suggest to up the anti a bit and go for the LGP, a lot more gun for the money.

Welcome to the forum
I had a .54 cal Cabela's trade rifle and it was a great shooter. I now have a Cabela's Hawken style .58 cal. I like the set triggers and also like the fact that you can buy IBS barrels for the Hawkens. The lyman and Cabela's are both made by the same company. You won't go wrong with either one IMO.

I have the Cabela's hawken in 50 cal in the flint. It's a great gun and a good shooter. Great for the price.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been lurking a few months. Does anybody know if the Lyman 57 for the trade rifle will fit the Cabelas Hawken.
Thanks,
Ryan

I think he's talking about the Lyman Trade Rifle. quite a bit different than the GPR. :v
(oops! I didn't read the "up the anti" part)

I have both and they are excellent shooters. As you note the main difference is the set trigger. The only complaint I have about either is the cheesy adjustable sight on the Hawken, I much prefer the fixed sight on the Trade rifle. The adjustable sight has a bad habit of moving after a bit of shooting. It is also an odd design that is not easily replaced without cutting a dovetail in the barrel.

I'd love a GPR but way out of my price range.

Take a look at this, you might decide it's not all that far out price range. http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=000156031112
Or you can get it in left hand for the same price!
I bought the kit but have yet to put it together, it's been a busy winter!
I don't think you will be displeased with the Lymans GPR!

Hello from Germany!

I think both rifles will be a good deal because the Cabela's Hawken is from Investarm and the Trade Rifle is also a Investarm rifle produced for Lyman. The difference is that the Trade Rifle has no patch box and no st trigger. The rest, especially lock and barrel are similar.

I've bought three of the cabella's Hawkens in 45 caliber and like them . I bought the first for my son-in -law and I liked it so I bought a set one percusion one flint for my self. The only changes I made was to replace the sights with fixed sights. I did this before I retired so I made plates that fit the tapped holes and had a dovetail grove in the plate. This allowed the use of a dovetailed fixed sight moved further out the barrel for my old eyes while allowing the replacement of the factory sight if later desired.

Problem solved I think. Track of the wolf lists a 15/16" 54 caliber barrel to fit my TC Hawken. Its a 32" ball barrel so I'll be close to the GPR I can't afford and I don't have to buy another peep sight. Monday I'll call and see how long the wait is as there's none in stock. Thanks for the input guys,Great forum.
