I already have a Cabelas Hawkens. I got it for Christmas. I was just wondering if it was made differently than the Lyman (Lesser quality).
Same factory for both, with differences in some parts and others interchangeable.
I have a Cabelas Hawken version with the double triggers, patch box and hooked butt. Triggers and locks are interchangeable with comparable models of Lymans.
The Lyman GPR barrel is held on with two wedges, while both the Lyman Trade Rifle and the Cabelas Hawken are held on with one. I don't have a Trade Rifle on hand right now to compare, but I'd be really surprised if the barrels weren't interchangeable with the Cabelas/Investarms, perhaps with a minor change to the underlug, perhaps not.
Gotta say a lotta guys stake their religion on a 1:60 or slower being inherently more accurate with round balls than a 1:48, calling the 1:48 some type of compromise. IF there's an accuracy loss it's probably due to their use of the wrong patch for shallower grooves, rather than twist rate. The original Hawken rifles were 1:48 twist and they were celebrated far and wide for their superior accuracy.
Lotta other quality guns back then were 1:48, too. In my own guns I've found shallow-grooved 1:48 barrels a little pickier about the patches, but in no way less accurate than slow twists.
Every time I hear a guy raising his nose at 1:48, I hear everything else he says in a lesser light. Inexperience is what I see rather than expertise. :idunno:
