I've never taken a coyote with a ML yet. But I dont see why a .45 with a RB shoulnt be enough for this thin skinned animal. If a 22 mag. or a shotgun can drop one I dont see why a .45 couldnt.

In eastern Colorado many of us used 22 long rifle on coyotes. They don't seem to mind at all. Very adequate cartridge. Wouldn't worry about a 32 round ball at all

They go down easy. A .50 is the smallest I’ve hunted them with, as it’s the smallest I’ve had.
Most I’ve taken has been snare wire hung on a barbed wire fence. They arent put off by the smell and used to being touched by the wire. They are too smart for my own good and I’ve never taken a coyote in a set trap, but snared more then one.
I would have no problem going after them with a .36 or .40.

I"ve heard it said that only the dumb or inexperienced ones fall for traps and rabbit calls. If thats so we are creating a race of "super coyotes" by leaving the smart ones who only breed wirh other smart ones. Plus there is no true race of pure coyote anymore as they all have domesticated dog in their genes.

In the previous post I mentioned that only the dumb coyotes fall for traps. That was meant to also include that only the Not-So-Smart ones come into the range of a firearm. That would make the ones taken with Black Powder guns even dumber would it not? As these guns have less of an ability to " reach-out- and- touch -someone" than modern arms.
But the topic is the charge that is used for the taking of this not-so-cunning-creature. I still think a .32 or .45 would be plenty.

Calling in coyote will "educate" him, and make it harder to call in more after you have called one in and shot it, in any given area, or the pack's territory, if they see you before you see them and get away that will also educate them. When you call one in and shoot it, there's most likely more that witnessed, and learned from the event, without being seen by the shooter.

.40cal 43 1/2"barrel, flint ignition. .390 or .395 ball, 75gr 3f. It'll rip a prairie dog in half at 125yds, have dropped several yotes at similar distances. I only hunt them when they get too bold-like standing 25yds from my porch and not running off, when I find track right behind mine or my neighbors house. I live way out, on 100+acres, and can shoot right off the porch.

They say that Hippies are proof that the coyotes mated with dogs. ??

Tests seem to show that the northeastern coyotes have a higher of percentage of wolf genes than coyotes in other areas of the east.

All excerpts below from this article:--->>> https://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/yes-eastern-coyotes-are-hybrids-coywolf-not-thing/

"New genetic tests show that all eastern coyotes are actually a mix of three species: coyote, wolf and dog. The percentages vary, dependent upon exactly which test is applied and the geographic location of the canine....

...Tests show that there are no animals that are just coyote and wolf (that is, a coywolf), and some eastern coyotes that have almost no wolf at all.

...This genetic swapping has happened more than once in their history; one study showed that the gene for black coat color found in North American wolves and coyotes today (but not in Old World wolves) originated in dogs brought to the continent by the earliest Native Americans. Some prehistoric hybridization event transferred the dog gene into wild wolves and coyotes....

The Eastern Coyote Is Born

We can estimate the date of the most recent hybridization events that created eastern coyotes by analyzing their genetic structure. Their DNA show that about 100 years ago, coyotes mated with wolves, and about 50 years ago with dogs. A century ago, wolf populations in the Great Lakes were at their nadir, living at such low density that some reproductive animals probably couldn’t find another wolf mate, and had to settle with a coyote....

The more recent date for the dog hybridization likely results from a cross-species breeding event at the very leading edge of the wave of colonizing coyotes in the east, possibly after a few females first spanned the St Lawrence seaway into upstate New York, where they would have encountered abundant feral dogs, but no other coyotes....

The coyote has not evolved into a new species over the last century. Hybridization and expansion have created a host of new coyote variations in the east, and evolution is still sorting these out...."

Yeah...and perhaps the hybrid requires a different patch material...possibly marmot hide. Just a thought.

Hybrids or purebreds, these pests are not Wylie Coyote. Yorkie size dogs and cats have become ‘Happy Meals’ in our neighborhood. Neighbors are thrilled I am thinning them out.

There are a couple hundred wooded acres behind our property. Plenty of of wildlife, although things are changing. 85 acres of mainly log pole pines directly behind us are being clear cut. Will interesting to see how it impacts wildlife patterns. Our property is mostly oak and hardwood. Yotes are easy to spot as they move about before the leaves come out (will be fully out within the next week). When I spot them behind the house, the subsonic 22RF, seems to drop them quickly. Talking shots off the deck or out the back door. Realistically, any muzzleloader 32 caliber or larger that you can hit a four inch target will work. If I were actually ‘hunting’ yotes, I would use my most accurate muzzleloader.

Something, I'm guessing coyotes with a little help from their cousins (dogs) , really thinned out the cats in our little community. For which I'm grateful. I heard housecats are one of coyotes favorite meals. But now the coyotes need some thinning out.

Coyotes will kill any cat they catch. That is the biggest complaint of urban and suburban home owners that border coyote country. Their pet house cats, and small ankle biter dogs, seem to disappear if left outside. Since the coyotes moved in to my rural area, I have seen markedly less turkeys, foxes, and wood chucks.

if you really want to have fun, get a pair of grey hound dogs. drive around with them, when you see one, turn them loose. they will catch them very quickly. snap their necks on the run. their is a guy around here who does that all the time. greyhounds are a great big lap dog but also love to run and kill coyotes.

i shoot coyotes with whatever rifle I'm carrying when the coyote is spotted, usually a .50 or .54 caliber muzzleloader. No coyote gets a pass.

And we are seeing a few more dead coyotes on the roadways. Not a whole lot but still enough to keep the buzzards happy. They used to know how to cross a highway without getting ran over. Like I mentioned earlier "only the dumb ones" are getting killed though.Believe me the crafty and smart ones are still out there.

We used to have over a quarter million sheep running every summer in the county where I live. Every single shepherd was carrying a rifle and they shot at every coyote they saw. With various degrees of success. (A rancher once asked me to look at a savage bolt gun his Basko had told him wouldn’t shoot. The bolt was rusted to the point where it was nearly impossible to cycle.) You could ride horseback for a long day and never see a coyote track and the high pastures were full of 30” mule deer bucks. (Our county is one of the most represented in Boone and Crockett records for typical mule deer.) If you saw a coyote during daylight hours he was running flat out, not waiting for the inevitable bullets to fly.
These days there are only a couple sheep outfits left, coyotes are everywhere and the valleys, prime winter deer and elk range, are full of golf courses, luxury homes and condominiums and deer and elk populations are dangerously low and the coyotes will trot around the golf courses with nary a care in the world. By rights I should be out there shooting every coyote I can find, but they are only a symptom of the problem...
Carry on,coyote slayers, don’t worry about educating the doggies, they’ll make more, carry on.
