Well I just got off the phone with Ruger and the lady I talked to was of no help, other than to say it sounded like I needed to send the revolver in.

So here I am posting my questions to the all knowing group of enthusiasts here on the FORUM.

I have a Ruger Old Army in Stainless Steel made back in 95 according to Rugers web site and my serial number on the revolver.

The problem I am having is that the half cock does not seem to work at times and at other times when I do get it to catch, the cylinder will not turn for loading. There are rare times though that the half cock works and the cylinder does turn freely for loading!!

If anyone could give me some advise on what to look for or how to fix this problem I would appreciate it.

The other concern I have is with the old (original) nex headed nipples. A friend said I should order another set of Ruger Nipples from the factory and install them. Evidently, the newer ones work better or hold the cap better or something. Can anyone tell me what the new Ruger nipples for this revolver have as an advantage over the old ones? I checked the nipples in the revolver with a CCI primer cap and they fit loosely enough I am certain they will back out during firing. Could this be the only problem with the older nipples and is this the problem that is solved with the newer nipples??

Appreciate the help,

Treso 11-50-12 are replacement nipples and seem to be very popular. May want to check those out?

Personally, I'd send it to Ruger. That way you know it's going to work perfectly. They check everything out and replace any other parts that aren't up to spec. I've had work done by them in the past and they're pretty quick and do a good job. They have never charged me for work, but they don't have a written warranty so it's possible that they could.

sound like maybe a broken sear notch that is also throwing the timeing off . I would send it in and have it checked out. they are good people and there trun around is not bad I have had them work a gun before and when i got it back it was better then when I bought it new .

Good advice above - send it back to Ruger for repair.

Nipples - the disadvantage to Ruger's OEM nipples is that they require a hex nipple wrench, which is never where you left it. Changing to Treso 11-50-12' means you can use generic pistol nipple wrenches that you can leave around the house wherever you might need them. Tresos are top quality, equal to if not better than Ruger's OEM nipples.

Caps - you didn't say what size cap you tried. CCI No. 11's, Remington No. 11's and RSW No. 1075's all work fine on my ROA, and that's also what the Ruger manual specifies.

I appreciate the help and the info.

This evening I took tore the ROA down to its components and found the problem. Evidently the guy who had it before me had buggered up the trigger plunger return spring and it was caught between the back half of the frame and the spot where it goes into the back of the middle part of the frame. Anyway it was holding the two parts of the frame off from each other in that area but I think the problem was that the spring was not all the way in and not applying the right amount of tension on the plunger.

Put it all back together and viola, it worked and the half cock also worked allowing the cylinder to spin freely.

I am going on the advice of some here and also with talking to others who shoot these fine revolvers and I am going to order a set or two of the nipples supplied by Ruger. I feel confident they will work and if not then I can always opt to go with the other ones mentioned above.

Thanks again for the responses

As others have already stated, Treso does make good nipples. If you decide to stick with the original-style nipples, pick up an inexpensive 3/16" nut driver from a tool store. It will fit the nipples perfectly and make the job of removal and reinstallation MUCH easier than using the Ruger L-wrench. I've used mine for better than 10 years and couldn't be happier with the job it does.

Good luck!

Well, very glad to learn that the trouble was 'pilot error' from a previous owner. Mine was a birthday present in 1986, and has been faultless in every respect, apart from shooting high, like they all do [aim lower]. Still on the original nipples as well, and all makes of #11 caps seem to hang on there.

BTW, what's a viola [a large stringed instrument of the violin family] got to do with it? :hmm:

You must have gotten the same one I got. I had a problem with a centerfire rifle and called service and got this gal who thought that sarcasm substituted for smarts. So, I started emailing. Finally some idjit calls, and guess what? He does not own a gun. He does not shoot. He does not have a single clue about what I was asking about. He could not find an answer in his crib sheet. I said let me talk to one of the engineers. OH NO, THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT PERMITTED.

That's a strange bunch a people there. This happened just last week. I feel yer pain.

Bountyhunter - you ask to talk to a supervisor or manager, not an engineer. If they refuse that you send a letter to the company president.

It was late, it was supposed to be VOILA, a French term meaning (See there!) as in being satisfied with the results.

Thanks

I got to talk to a woman yesterday when I called Ruger. She was not arrogant but I could tell after the first couple of sentences that she didn't know anything about what I was talking about and all that she was there for was so she could direct me to mailing the revolver in so that they could look at it.

I remember her name but won't mention it here since I am sure that she was doing her job. You would think that they would have people that are familiar with shooting at least and that perhaps they would have some knowlege about what problems I was referring.

I was not displeased with Ruger over the call and will do business with them when I order the nipples. They are a big company and I am sure finding qualified people to help you when you call in might be a problem.

Alors, moi, Je savais cela.

tac, shooting high is a common problem with the Rugers that they are aware of. If you contact them, they will send you a new taller front sight insert free that will fix the problem. They did that for me and it works great. Hope this helps, Jim

That's the ticket - Both my dad's were the same as well.

Probably more a product of the times, more so than bad customer service. In todays sue happy environment, its probably much better for the company to just have you ship it to them than to risk being sued over misinterpretting instructions, no matter how simple. Its a shame things have come to this all to often today.

Then, me, I knew that. I pulled only your leg. I do frequently usage of this word as a joke, in family, well turn sour!

Most of my family speaks also a minimum of English. We like to 'play' with the words, and has a very funny time when we are at the same time.

'Luck!
