Check out "Cresson Mountain Muzzleloaders." Not well known but I have one built by partner Jeffrey Hagens, It is as pretty and excellent as any I have seen. When I posted photos, it drew raves. I have a Pedersoli Tryon in 54 RB twist-actually at one time owned 2. Both shoot/shot exceptionally well. Won lots of matches with them. I bet I have many thousand rounds through the one that is here. Buying a gun is like buying a car. You want a green color the salesman has a blue one. Buy the one you want.

The Pedersoli isn't terrible for a production gun but I will echo what many have said already that for what the Frontier would cost you are getting into the price range of much better quality muzzleloaders. If you put a Frontier rifle beside one of Jim Kibler's rifles it would almost be laughable the difference in quality and for really around the same price of just a little more.

Are you referring to a Kibler kit? Or a rifle that Jim built himself? I navigated around the Kibler site, and all I seemed to find were kits. Is there somewhere I can buy a new Kibler rifle outright?

Welcome to the group. My experience with purchasing Pedersoli items from dealers has been an education to say the least. I tried to make a purchase from IFG, they could have cared less and wanted a non-refundable 40% down at the time of order with no idea of a delivery date. I contacted Taylor's, they required no deposit but did say I should contact Pedersoli directly for shipment information. The people at Pedersoli were very nice to deal with and responded quickly to my inquiries. I have a Mortimer and a Jager in .54, very nice muzzle loaders and fun to shoot.
If this route works for you, I just purchased a kit from Kibler's in .54, something you could have in just a few days. The kit was advertised in .45, but they were happy to accommodate my request for .54.

I’ve been speaking with a few members, and it seems like none of the Kibler kits offer the gold patch box like the Ped Frontier.

I am certainly hearing folks that Kiblers are better quality. I truly do no doubt it. But if I’m going to drop $2K or likely more….I would like to spend the money on both quality AND look that I actually want!

I know a custom builder can do this easily….but the ones I have spoke with have the same or longer lead times as ordering a Ped, and a much higher price point.

Hey guys, I am brand new to traditional muzzle loading, and brand new to the forum.

I have been SCOURING the interweb, trying to find a Pedersoli (even a Taylor’s branded) Frontier Maple Deluxe .54 Flintlock.
Apparently this rifle is unobtainium! After deep digging, I got in touch with the Italian Firearms Group (IFG) who does the majority of Pedersoli’s importing. They told me I could order the rifle, but looking at 15+ months!

I know I could go custom, and have spoken to several fine gun makers, but as you all know, similar or longer lead times, and significantly more money.

I have found the Pedersoli rifle in .50 cal….but was REALLY wanting the .54, as I plan to hunt elk sized animals, including some exotics, and had hoped to play around with the challenge of long range flintlock target shooting.

Anyone have any leads on where I could POSSIBLY find the rifle?? A note* I have searched preowned classifieds nearly everywhere.
Was hoping one of you would know a dealer/gun shop that may have one on a shelf, somewhere in the free world.

Hard to go wrong with a Kibler kit.
SUPER QUALITY and just about the most likely excellent outcome for someone putting together their first kit gun. Both the Woodsrunner and the Colonial Rifle both offered in .54 cal.
Easiest kit for fitting together looks to be the Woodsrunner.

That is a BEAUTIFUL rifle. But it does not look very much at all like the Pedersoli Frontier Deluxe that I’m wanting.

I’m perfectly ok with buying something that’s not Ped….especially if the quality is better. But I want it to look a certain way. If that ends up costing me a little more; that’s ok too. Just trying to find something that I like, that is available to purchase in reasonable time frame. I’m ready to start playing longhunter NOW!!! Ha ha!

No not a rifle that Jim himself built just a Kibler rifle in general. The Colonial, Southern Mountain Rifle and the Woodsrunner all show up for sale on this forum fairly regularly. Often times they are being sold for not much more than the price what the kit costs. But I'm not saying there aren't other choices, sites like Track of the Wolf regularly will list very nice rifles in the same price range or just a little more than what the Frontier would cost. Really there are many options but unfortunately most aren't going to get you a gun tomorrow but at least if you have an idea on possible alternatives than you will be ready when the opportunity presents itself.

Go with a Kibler Woodsrunner kit even an inexperienced gun builder can handle building these especially with the aid of Jim’s fine instructional videos. I have built two Woodsrunners and if a 11 thumbed klutz like myself can turn out a nice piece anyone can.

Have you considered building a rifle from a kit? I have a Pedersoli Frontier flintlock walnut in .45, and I also built a Kibler Southern Mountain Rifle also flintlock walnut in .45, so the two rifles are very similar in function and capability. But the Kibler is by far the better shooter. Also easier to handle. Faster ignition. Even a better looker (in my eyes, anyway). My Pedersoli is hanging on a wall as a display piece, and my Kibler is in a gun case in my gun closet, ready to go out shooting. I don't think the SMR is available in .54, but the other Kibler kits are.

The woods runner goes up to 54 the colonial up to .58

At this time, I do not have the time or interest in assembling a rifle from a kit. I have a DOD tactical background, and am a highly experienced long range precision shooter. I have the knowledge I’m sure, and I know it would be rewarding. Just quite simply don’t have the time….or choose not to make time.

I would like to purchase a “decent” quality rifle, to get my feet wet with a flintlock. I am slightly particular on the look I want and the rifle, and the Pedersoli Frontier Maple Deluxe nearly nails the look.
If I could buy a Kibler out right, ready to shoot, I’d consider going that route.

I had a Hatfield, in .50, which is what the Pedersoli frontier and the Cabelas blue ridge are patterned after. Although Pedersoli did offer it in a .54, Bob Hoyt refused to open my .50 to a .54 since the barrel is on 7/8” across the flats.
The Pedersoli lock is an underperformer as far as locks go. From my experience, I would not gamble on it going off with a once in a lifetime shot at an elk. My Hatfield is long gone. My Kibler Colonial is here to stay with one of the finest locks made today. Sure ignition for that elk hunt. Save your money for a Kibler “Woodsrunner” or “Colonial”In .54 caliber. You will not be sorry in the future.

I have seen all of those listings. None are quite what I’m looking for, unfortunately. I really have my heart set on the look of that Frontier, and specifically with the tiger maple wood.

No! Bob Hoyt will not do it on a 7/8” barrel. It’s neither safe or worth it. The Pedersoli also has a chambered breech and a not-so-great quality lock.
Find something better. You will be happier in the long run. Trust me, I ran that race.

Kibler can recommend someone to put your Woodsrunner or Colonial together.
You get a super high quality historically accurate rifle that will not lose value.
Do call Kibler and speak to either him, his wife Katerine or his assistant Lori.
