A friend informed me that he could not find Goex black powder here in Oklahoma. Could he use Pyrodex as a main charge in his flintlock and still use Goex 4ffff as a primer charge?
Told him to give me a day...cause I :idunno: knew where to get a good answer. :idunno:

It can work but not by itself. Put 5-10 grs of real black powder (3f) in first and than use the Pyrodex (Pyeodex load reduced by the same amount). It isn't all the way to good but it will shoot.
I have gotten the Pyrodex to shoot all by itself in my TC's but the ignition is so slow as to make it useless for any practicable use.
In the end you need real black powder anyway so why not just use real black powder in the first place?

I tried it once and from that I would say no a friend had the same experience on the same day and we were using his pyro pistol powder, most use a bit of real BP then top of with the synthetic powders but nearly all reports show faster, more consistant ignition/accuracy with real BP in flinters, hopefully someone here will share a place close to you where BP is available, one can order it delivered most anywhere in the continental USA but the hazmat fee makes small lots pretty spendy, but it has nearly indefinite shelf life so it will keep. Good luck on your quest. My guess is that the do not mix powder warning is an attempt to prevent BP or the synthetics from being mixed with modern smokeless type powders? and a good general rule of thumb.

Thanks for the info. I called him and told him, no pyrodex and to order blackpowder online. Also told him to order me a couple of pounds of 3f Goex while he was at it. When it came in...would he kindly bring it over to me.

I don't know where you are in Oklahoma but it I was that close to Ark. I just might have to go to PowderInc and get it from them. By pass the Hazmat fee and have small trip at the same time.
Fox

Not exactly “mixing” of the two. Really no different than the Pyrodex pellets available. The bottom line is, as long as you NEED real black powder anyway, why are you not just using it exclusively? That's the part I don't understand. :hmm:

Quoting verbatim from Hodgdon, the maker of Pyrodex:

"Flintlock: To insure proper ignition in flintlock systems, 5 grains of FFFFG priming powder should be placed into the bore prior to loading the main charge of Triple Seven or Pyrodex. Consult the loading data in this brochure to determine the proper charge for the caliber firearm used and the chosen projectile. The main powder charge should be reduced by 5 grains to compensate for the addition of the priming powder. While holding the firearm vertically, slowly pour the measured charge of Triple Seven or Pyrodex into the barrel. Seat the projectile firmly against the powder. Make certain that there is no airspace between the powder and the projectile."

Notice that Hodgdon does not say to mix the black powder with the Pyrodex. Rather, it says to put the real black powder in first and then load the Pyrodex over it.
