Was actually thinking of this and put some in a mortar pastel and give a light grind, wood one.

just find a screen with the mesh smaller than fffg and screen the fines out . or spread it on a hard surface and cover with plastic wrap, roll with a rolling pin.

Go out and shoot your rifle primed with 3F before you grind it down...... Works just as well, doesn't suck up ambient moisture like 4F and you won't have to fool with grinding powder.

idonthaveamusketyet, When I got my first FL, I ground some coarser powder into FFFFg using a ceramic mortar and pestle and a full face shield. Even though I ground no more than 2 tablespoons of the larger powder, I don't recommend doing so and have never done so since. Listen to the above advice: FFFg and even FFg will work quite nicely as priming powder.

For what it’s worth, I prime with 2f. It works fine for me.

Answer is: NO. If you grind bp you get ground powder dust. And, there is no point. Tests have proven little, if any, difference in ignition time between 3 & 4.

I've primed a fair amount with 3F and didn't notice any real difference. Don't grind; just use 3F.

Use a wooden mortar and pestle ,and don't over do it. Have done it before , and doesn't take much effort , doesn't have to be dust.

The difference would be perceptible only to the most sophisticated scientific instruments. Just use the 3f and enjoy! You'll never know the difference.

I would leave the 3fg as is. Iffin you just gotta, lay a thin layer of powder between two pieces of wax paper. Roll over LIGHTLY with a rolling pin. Don't let your wife catch you. She may take the rolling pin and say, "watch this"!

What brand is that? Can you post a picture of the can, please? I've seen 5fg before, but I didn't buy any. A also passed up on 7fg. My money got tight for a while. I never saw these granulations again. I have 2 lbs. of 4fg, which is more than enough for my life span. I only use 4fg because I have a priming pan dispenser and like to have the same amount of powder in my pan every time. I'm not as good when I try to fill the pan from my horn. It's either too little, or way too much.

5 fa is a pyrotecnic /blasting grade. uncoated .about equivalent to 3fg.

I owned a CVA Squirrel rifle in flint that I sold to a member on here a year or so ago. I tried Null B, 4F Goex, 3F Goex and 3F Swiss Just to see which worked best. Could not tell a difference and since I am not a competitive shooter I would use whatever was on hand. Have a full pound of Null B and 2 pounds of 4F Goex but no flint guns. So it will last forever. Hope to have my 40 flinter by the end of the year so I can start burning some powder. The 32s eat so little these days I wont ever need powder again.

I've primed with Fg, FFg, FFFg, FFFFg and nullB. They all work just fine. Give it a shot.
