I have never tried this on a horn, but epoxy putty might be something to exeriment with. If you could work a bit of dye into it it can be pushed in the voids and filed/scraped/sanded flush after curing. I have used it on other repairs (non gun related) and it is good stuff.

I had thought about that as I had some "Fasteel" which is a steel impregnated putty. Wound up going with the JB weld and appears to be working great.
 
Sorry to be so late in answering this, but been working out of town for a while.

You might consider having a horner turn you a band to cover the repair.
