It seems that we all need one of these on occasion, some more then others...

We sometimes get lost in the expensive gear of our passion. Many thousands can be spent on expensive guns and the gear that goes with them. I always look over other folks kits at 'Vous. I look at the small details of the accoutrements that they carry. Tells me alot about the individual.

To that end...let's see some of your vent picks, just to see that there is some individual pieces and not the stuff marketed by the major providers...

Couple of mine. Total investment $5... One was free, the other five bucks at a gunshow. Not a big investment, but both fit my kit and thrifty (reads cheap) personality.

Here's one I made awhile back along with the brush.

Since the photo was taken, I've lengthened the point of the pick.

I just raid the wifes sewing cupboard for those pins with the large plastic heads. I ujse the small ones for nipples on the percusion, large onces for the vent on the flint. Cost, free until the wife catches me! :surrender:

I just use a sort length of malleable wire a little smaller than the TH.

God bless

I used to forge a lot of them and still have a few around. I keep one on my shooting bag, but I use simple wires made from music wire more often. I have two sizes, the smaller one is used for nipples. I keep one stuck in my hatband and a couple in the shooting boxes.

Don't have a picture but I just take a small antler tip and insert a piece of 12 gauge solid copper wire and file a point on it.

I have the factory TC one but I never use it. The ones pictured are sure cool looking.

If I were you, I'd consider the hatband idea as officially stolen...

What a great idea!!

Steal away! I ain't the first one to do it, I can tell you that! Be careful though, I've lost a few wires over the years. Better keep some spares handy.

I coil the end of a wire around a pair of scrolling pliers and make a loop. Then you can tie it to whatever or let the loop kind of grab the top of your hatband when you poke it behind there. I lose some of mine because I get in a hurry and don't always push it all the way and the loop doesn't grab.

It doesn't warrant a photo, but the last time I needed a vent pick, I'd left it in another bag. Since I was at a range, I simply straightened a staple and cleared the vent.

I use a piece of hay wire. And Wattsy thought using rope for a sling was hick!

I always end up making things that are a little more complicated that I had originally planned. This is my favorite pick and whisk set. The pick is also an excellent sewing awl and has a brass scabbard to keep from poking holes in everything. I have made fancy whisks before only to have the brush wear out and have to remake them. So I made this one with a replaceable horse hair brush. I have made the handles out of ebony, antler, and ivory.

I have been storing a nipple pick in my derby hatband for years. So long a period that there is a personal imprint in the band. I just have a piece of piano wire bent to fit my finger.

I use a cutting torch tip cleaner for mine, at least till I can get me one of them purty forged kind.
