Here's an 11' by 14' canvas bag I just finished. The waxed thread did not take the dye well but that's ok with me. Mixed brown, black and a bit a red. Came out a maroon color but I like it.

I'm no bag expert, but next time try using the thread un-waxed.

I don't think it's necessary to wax thread for when sewing cloth. From what I understand, the wax is used to lube the thread to faciltate the sewing of leather.

For fabric you use the thread as is and if you want to wax the bag after dying go for it.

Nice work, by the way. Enjoy, J.D.

I recognize how much extra work was involved, but you're going to be really happy you doubled the fabric in that strap. In my experience loading can cause stretch and other issues if you don't arrange a heavier strap somehow.

Good planning!

As for the waxed/unwaxed thread issue, I'm more of a pragmatist. I find that linen thread holds up much better when waxed, so I'm reluctant to use it plain for the sake of dying. The answer would be to dye it to match your fabric before waxing, or better for my tastes, simply buy colored prewax. Here is my favorite variety from one source I've used. Great thread available in several sizes and about a bazillion colors.

Sorry jd but waxed thread is also used by those who hand sew cloth - even experienced embroiders (like my wife) use waxed thread. Waxing thread for any material is best since it strengthens the thread as well as helps keep it from tangling.

VERY - nicely done bag and in the future you can pre-dye the thread before waxing or use colored thread.

Brown Bear,

I am not sure but I think I got the idea for the strap from something you posted. I cut an 8" strip of canvas and then folded the edges in to the center and then folded it in half. I then stitched both edges. Seems pretty strong and was a very convenient way to do it. Thanks if it was your idea.

It also helps keep the thread from fraying by reducing friction.

Good to know. Thanks guys, J.D.

boy that sure is some nice straight stitching there! I can do leather that way, but forget it on cloth!! Excellent job! nice color too.
